SIEMENS ACQUIRES PTI

RALEIGH, Jan. 6, 2005 (News Release) Siemens Power Transmission & Distribution (PT&D) announced that is has acquired the business activities of Shaw Power Technologies Inc. (USA) & Shaw Power Technologies International Limited (UK), commonly known as PTI.
PTI is the global leader in network planning software and engineering studies. The company's PSS/E (Power System Simulator for Engineering) software is widely used by power network experts in many regions, especially English speaking countries and China. PTI is headquartered in Schenectady, New York, and has over 80 network planning specialists located in the United States and UK as well as key partners in high growth regions such as
Malaysia and China.

The acquisition represents an important extension of the Siemens PT&D service portfolio in the U.S. market where PTI's software has been selected by many leading utilities and used by many reliability councils and regulatory agencies. \"TI complements Siemens' existing service business by enabling us to now offer a complete portfolio of both transmission & distribution network planning\" said Dave Pacyna, President & CEO of Siemens Power Transmission & Distribution, Inc. \"Recent events such as blackouts have increased the pressure to improve reliability. Network design and consulting is an essential part of determining where investments will be made,\" he concluded.

In business for 34 years, PTI has amassed a significant installed base of its network planning software in both utility and industrial applications. With this acquisition and its SINCAL (Siemens Network Calculation) product suite, Siemens can offer a complete range of modular software suites and consulting expertise to simulate, analyze and interactively optimize network reliability and performance. By leveraging the strength of both the Siemens and PTI brands, Siemens will supply proven solutions for transmission and
distribution networks for utility and industry customers in countries following either ANSI or IEC standards.

\"We plan to build on PTI's recognized expertise and support their established customer base by providing innovative solutions to today's network reliability challenges, independent of the installed equipment. PTI & Siemens will continue to set the standard for quality network planning,\" said Dr. Bernd Buchholz, Head of Network Planning at Siemens PTD (AG) & CIGRE Committee Member. The Siemens PT&D Service Division provides support for the entire asset lifecycle of transmission & distribution networks including planning, training, project management, maintenance and upgrade.
