英语史上（据说）有最多歧义的句子

英语虽是当今的世界语，但依然充斥着歧义句，含糊不清，往往一句两解，不太明确。

　　英国近代两位文法大师Jocobs与Rosendbaum合著的English Transformational Grammar为我们提供了“一句六解”的例句，可说是当代歧义句子之中的最高纪录。

　　请大家细读这句有史以来最多解法的话：

这个句子的歧义与（1）主要谓词“tell"有关；（2）“stop "这里的组合可以有主动和被动两种可能性和（3）介词性状语”on campus"可能出现的句法位置有关：
第一种意思：
  The Seniors were told [seniors to stop the demonstrating on campus]. (大致中文意思：the senirs被叫去阻止 the demonstrating)
第二种意思：
  The Senoirs were told [  to Seniors stop demonstrating on campus]. (大致中文意思： seniors 停止 the demonstrating)
第三/四种意思：
  The Seniors were told [seniors to (seniors) stop [the demonstrating on campus]].(大致中文意思：阻止校园里的demonstrating)
第五/六种意思：
  [The Seniors were told [seniors to (seniors) stop [ the demonstrating ] ][on campus]]
( 大致中文意思：校园里的seniors .....)

这种歧义结构英语和汉语都不缺，尤其是句子有两个以上的谓语结构时，状语性的短语的句法位置通常都有歧义。下面有汉语很英语的例子：
张三在火车上写字。（有歧义）
张三在火车上看海。（一般不会理解有歧义）
John is chasing the thief on the roof. (有歧义）
John is feeding the dog in the garden. (john in the garden 或者the dog in the garden)

呵呵，是这样的。这句话只是结构上有歧义的可能，但是一般在理解上不会觉得有歧义，不同于“John is chasing the thief on the roof."

歧义是语言学里面很重要的一个部分。看到大家能对这个表现表示兴趣，很欣慰！

第2个解法：
