Chapter Five
The sudden ringing of the phone disturbed their happy talking, and the princess was even annoyed by the noises, for she had never heard any sound like that before and she didn’t like it.
“What’s that?” Since the ringing went on and on, the princess asked.
“It’s my teacher. He wants to report me to my mom.” Said the little boy, vexed.
“So aren’t we going to mute it? I don’t like the noises!” said the princess and stood up, pointed her magic stick to the phone, well, it became quiet all of a sudden.
“You broke it?” said the boy in a low voice. The phone had broken into five pieces.
“Don’t worry about that. Just don’t wake up your mother.” The princess said and sat down, “Come on. We are having a good time, aren’t we? Tell me something about you!” The little boy just stared at her, worried.
“We are never going to wake her up?” After a while, he asked.
“As long as you don’t want her to wake up!” said the princess.
“I surely don’t want her to wake up. But daddy may come back. He may find it.” He said.
“Oh-oh.” Exclaimed the princess. She forgot the little boy should have a daddy.
“Yea. I didn’t know you also had a daddy. You know, people in my kingdom don’t have fathers, so I forgot people here should have fathers. But don’t worry. I can fix it. I just don’t want it to work now. Come on, don’t worry about anything Sit here.” Hearing her words, the boy sat down again.
“I just don’t understand why you are so afraid of your parents and you are not happy together. You are just like, Eh, not like a family. Are all the families here like yours?” asked the princess.
“Yea.”
“Oh, poor kids. Er, and you seem to be afraid of your teacher too. Is he also so scary?”
“He always reports me to my mom. He always takes my storybooks away and gives them to my mom. They don’t want me to read story books.”
“Oh. That’s not good.”
“Fairy sister, can you do me a favor?”
“Yes?”
“I want to find my books, but I can’t find them. Can you help me?”
“Sure. Are the book in your home?”
“I have looked for them everywhere but I can’t find them. I don’t know where she hid them.”
“It’s easy.”
“You can find them for me?”
“Yea. Let’s just go back to the time when she hid your books and then we will know where she hid them.”
“Go back to the time?” the little boy shook his head, not understanding her words.
“Yea. With me, everything could happen. Hold my hand! Let’s go back!” the princess held the little boy’s hand and then the little boy felt they had fallen into a dark hole, but the feeling didn’t last long. Soon later, he found he was standing behind her mother, who was holding one of his storybooks. He took a deep breath out of horror. He wasn’t expecting to see his mother. But the princess held his little hand tight.
“Don’t be afraid. She can’t see us.” Said the princess and the mother really didn’t seem to hear them at all. She just went to a picture, hung on the wall, and pushed the picture aside. The little boy at last knew where all her storybooks were. They were hidden in the wall behind the picture. Well, that’s what he didn’t expect. He just searched the cupboards and drawers. That’s why he never found them.
“Let’s go back.” Said the princess and then they fell into the dark hole again and soon later, they came back. The boy didn’t say anything but rushed to the room, in which his books were hidden. He pushed the picture aside and put his hand into the hole. To his great joy, he felt the books.
“They are here! They are here!” He shouted excitedly, eyes shining and took out the books one by one.
“Thank you.” He laughed and said to the princess. He really had changed a lot. He hadn’t laughed so loudly and so happily for years, though he was only ten years old. Well, his mother, the woman who was still lying in bed, was from the countryside. She acted as if she exactly knew how to educate a child, while what she did was just to compare his child with others’, and when she found the difference between hers and others’, she did anything she could to make her child like anyone else’s. He was supposed to be good at all his subjects at school and he could speak good English and do well in drawing, but for the first thing, he shouldn’t do what he really liked, like reading stories or making up stories. Living under huge pressure, the little boy lost his laughter day by day until he happened to meet the happy princess. But now, the boy’s broad smile faded.
“Well, what’s going on?” noticing that, the princess asked.
“If only I could get the one my teacher took away from me today.” Said the little boy.
“Maybe we can, only if you know where he lives.”
“I know where he lives. He can’t have taken it home. It must be in his office. But in this way, I’ll be a thief.”
“Oh. Don’t worry about this. It’s your book. He took it away from you without your permission and now you just take back what belongs to you. Besides, you don’t have to do it, cause I’ll do it for you. What you should do is just to show me the way.”
Smiles invaded onto the boy’s face again. He imagined how happy Liuying, the girl from whom he borrowed the book, would be. Thinking he could return the book to her and made her happy, he relieved and he just wanted to go to the teacher’s office at once and grab the book. So he smiled and ran to the door.
“Or, we can do it like this.” But the princess walked slowly after him and said, “We even don’t have to go there.”
“We don’t have to go there?” the boy was confused again.
“Yea. We don’t have to go there. I have a good way. Come on.” In doubt, the little boy came back to her.
“You just wrote a story about what happened to you and then we can go into the story and take the book out.”
“Can we?” for a moment, the boy didn’t know the logic of what the princess said, but when he knew what it meant, he asked, amazed.
“Somebody has forgotten what I have said! Just keep in mind. Anything might happen with my being here. Come on. Take out a piece of paper and a pen and write.” The princess demanded so the boy did what as she demanded. He took out an exercise book and a pen and started to write a story. He wrote like this:
“I like reading stories. But I don’t have storybooks now. My mother has taken my storybooks away. I borrowed a storybook from my classmate Liuying. She liked the book very much. She didn’t want to lend the book to me. She was afraid the teacher would take it away. But I promised I wouldn’t read it in class. At last, she lent the book to me. But I liked the stories in that book very much. I read in class and I forgot anything around me. The prince finally found Cinderella. And the teacher found I was not listening to him. He came to me and took my book away.”
“Ok. Let’s stop here.” He hadn’t finished I, but the princess stopped him.
“Come on, hold my hand.” Said the princess and she held the little boy’s hand, who felt falling into a hole again. But soon later, he found he was sitting in the classroom, holding the book while the teacher tried to pull it out of his hand.
“Let it go.” He heard a voice said by his ear. It’s the princess and he suddenly realized he was only in his story. Well, it’s very much like being in a dream. But knowing the princess was nearby, he loosed his hands and the teacher took the book away, and he found Liuying watching him and everything was just like what happened in the daytime. Then, the bell rang and the teacher went out.
“Wait here. I’ll be back, with the book of course.” He heard the princess’s voice again. He waited there, anxiously. He saw that girl sitting there, sad. He didn’t know why he had the courage and went to her.
“Sorry, Liuying,” he said, “but don’t worry. I’ll return the book to you tomorrow.” He had just finished these words when he felt somebody caught his arm.
“Let’s go!” it’s the princess’s voice and then he felt falling into a dark hole again. A moment later, he was in the sitting room with the princess again and the book.
“It worked.” He shouted happily, taking the book into his hands.
“Yes. It is this one. I can’t believe it. It’s wonderful. Fairy sister, how great you are.” He shouted in wild happiness and jumped.
“Yea. That’s what you should be. A happy boy.” Said the princess and watched the happy boy, smilingly. |
