Qiqi
My name is Qiqi. In Chinese it’s 奇奇,but now I have to say it’s 凄凄.Here is my story.
I’m a mouse. I used to have five brothers and sisters. However, one day they were all taken away by three boys. I was the only one left. Mom and daddy felt very sad of course.
Later, we moved out of the hay into a hole, our new home. It’s dark there but mom and daddy told me it’s safe there. They asked me to stay in and never allow me to go out and every time when I really got bored and asked them to take me out, they would accompany me. But it’s only in the night. However, I’m eager to go out in the daytime. One day, they finally agreed. But before I went out, my daddy asked me to stay in for a little longer. He went out and then came back and said it’s safe outside. I didn’t know why they didn’t let me go out myself. They took back the food and never asked me to do it myself. I wanted to do it myself as they did. But they forbid me. They told me it’s dangerous outside and I was their only child.
“Stay in this room.” Daddy said when we were out. I agreed, but in my heart, I said no. I wanted to know the world somewhere else. They always kept an eye on me but then finally I got a chance and fled into another room. It’s quiet there. In order not to be found, I decided to go somewhere farther, which I did. Then I suddenly found there was no wall in front of me, but a big living monster. I wanted to say Hello to him. I wanted to know who he was. So I went close to him. He must feel depressed because he was quiet there. I said Hello. He turned back. His eyes were lit when he saw me. He got up and walked towards me. I wanted to make friends with him. So I smiled and said Hello again. He opened his mouth and I saw his teeth, big and sharp. His smile was not so graceful, but it’s still a smile so I smiled back. But all of a sudden, I felt something burst out and blocked my way. It’s daddy.
“Take him away.” He shouted, but didn’t look back. I saw his body shaking. For a moment that monster seemed shocked but then he opened his mouth again. I didn’t know why father was so frightened. He should be nice to others. But I was taken away by my mom. I didn’t want to go. I didn’t get his Hello. He might want to say Hello to me. Why were daddy and mom so afraid of him?
Mom was very angry when we got back. She was shaking. I never saw her like this before. From then on, I didn’t see daddy again.
“Never go out again.” Said mom and I got bored of it. She took back the food as before. She told me my daddy was killed by that monster that they called dog. But I didn’t believe it. I just knew daddy was rude to that dog. But mom never went out in the daytime and in the night, she just went out for a while every time. I didn’t have a chance to go out. But then my mom got busier and busier. She took the food and stored it. At first she went out only in the night but then one day she finally went out in the daytime. I didn’t know it because I was asleep. Then when I woke up I found he was not there. When she came back I pretended to be sleeping and several days later, after I found he was out longer and longer and she believed I was asleep all the time, I got out.
There I saw a living thing that looked like mom. But once he saw me, he laughed.
“Oh. What a big fat ugly thing.” He said, laughingly. He was a strong one! He then rushed away and before I got out of the room, I saw many mice coming out. They all laughed at my figure when they saw me. I got depressed. They all look beautiful and strong and they had smooth hair. They took me to a place where I saw many mice facing us. But among them, there was a big fat mouse.
“Look. It’s you. Look how ugly you are.” They laughed and said.
“No. It’s not me.” I cried and shouted.
“What are you doing here?” Suddenly I heard mom’s voice.
“Oh. Look, how ugly he is!” They pointed to me and said.
“Mom. Am I so ugly?” I asked.
“What? He is your son?” they asked. “You told us your son is beautiful.”
“Lets go back!” mom came to me and said.
“Mom, why am I different? Why am I ugly?” once we were back, I asked.
“No. Dear. You are not different. You are the most beautiful one in mom’s heart.” Mom said, but the laughter was always in my head.
“No. I don’t believe it. I want to go out. I want to go out as they do.” I cried and I couldn’t stop it.
“Dear. They also should stay at home.”
“Then why were they out?’
“They are just not good kids. Dear, you are a good child. Here. Have a taste of this cake. It’s delicious.
I still had something to say, but I couldn’t resist the smell of the cake. In my dream, I was like them. I was as strong as they were. My hair was smooth too. I had to doubt mom’s words.
The next day, I got out again.
“Oh. Look, the ugly fat mouse is out again.” But once I was seen by another one, he shouted and many others came out. Now I believed mom lied to me. They could come out any time they wanted. But I got angry. I didn’t like the word Ugly or Fat.
“No. I’m not ugly. My mom said I was the most beautiful mouse in the world.” I shouted. But my words stirred their laughter. Some even stood on their back legs.
I didn’t want to see them. I ran out. I wanted to stay out. But I felt it’s so hard for me to move. I became out of breath.
“Oh. Look. The mouse even couldn’t move.” They followed me and laughed behind me. But suddenly I saw that monster again.
“Help me.” I cried. “Help me.” They laughed at me! Help me.” I cried to him. I thought he was my only friend because I ever said Hello to him. I saw he open it’s mouth. He got close to me and put his front right claws on me. He wanted to play with me. Oh, he was the only one who was kind to me. The others all laughed at me. I felt itchy and I laughed. But then he turned away.
“Hey. Where are you going?” I asked. I wanted to play with him a little longer. But he just walked away. I wanted to follow him, but I couldn’t move fast. I had to move slowly.
“Oh. Oh.” Then I heard the mouse again. They exclaimed. I knew why. The big monster just liked me. He played with me, though they were all behind me, he just played with me.
“You are still alive. He let you go.” They said.
“How? He likes me.” I said proudly.
“What?” They laughed again, but then I saw my mom coming to me. She smiled when she saw me there. But I wanted to tell her my story!
“Dear, what are you doing here?” She said, to my surprise, because I thought she would be angry with me.
“Oh. He thinks the dog likes him.” They said, in a funny way.
“Yes. Yes. Mom. The dog only likes me. He just played with me. He didn’t play with them.” I said proudly and I heard laughter again.
“Play with you? Oh. He wanted to eat you. but look, how ugly you are. Even the dog doesn’t want to eat you. You fat thing.” They said. Of course I didn’t believe them. They were just jealous.
“He likes me. He put his claws on me and smelt me. It makes me itchy. What fun!” I said.
“Dear. Go back with me!” My mom said. But I saw the monster again and he came with a friend. I became glad. I would prove they were wrong. So I said Hello to him and smiled.
“You like me, don’t you?” I asked smilingly. But I found all the others had run away immediately they saw them except mom. She stood before me.
“Run, run, run.” Mom shouted to me. But I refuse to move. He was my friend and his friend was also my friend. Why should I run away in the presence of friends?
“Please don’t eat my son. Please eat me instead.” Mom said. But I thought it’s fun. How could they eat us? I was their friend and she was my mom!
“Mom. He is not going to eat me. He likes me!” I said and wanted to say Hello to my new friend.
“No. Dear. Dear. He ate your daddy. He is our enemy. Run away, or they will eat both of us.” Mom almost begged. But I just smiled towards them. They looked at me too. But they didn’t smile. Then they took away my mom with their mouth, teeth in her body. I saw red liquid bursting out. I was shocked. And I finally believed what mom said was true.
I didn’t see mom again but sometimes I did see that monster. Now I knew he was my enemy and he would eat me. I tried to run away but every time when he saw me, he didn’t run after me. He just shook his head and then walked away. But I did know he always ran after the others and ate them when he caught them. So I was supposed to live a comfortable life then. The dog didn’t eat me and my mom stored the food for me and I could come out any time I want. But things were not always as good as it should be. One day, I was taking a walk in the room, and all of a sudden, I heard a boy cry.
“Look. What a big fat mouse here.” This time I didn’t believe he was my friend so I tried to run away. But I was too fat to escape. He caught me without any difficulty. He showed me to the other boys.
“What a fat mouse.” Everyone who saw me exclaimed.
“It must have a lot of fat. Lets have fun.” Said a boy. Then he took out a small box and I saw he put the box close to my tail and then I felt it hurt. It’s burning. I struggled to run away, but I was too fat to run. I was burnt and the burning lasted for a long time and it gained the boys’ applause.
“I swear he has the most fat.” They said. “He must be a very lazy mouse.”
Am I lazy? I didn’t want to be lazy! I became fat before I knew it. Is it my fault? Perhaps it is not. |
